On the nature of perception

You cannot observe your own observation. The moment you turn attention toward the process of attention, you have changed it. This is not a limitation to be overcome — it is the structure of consciousness. The work is not to escape it, but to understand what it costs.

The shelf test

A useful diagnostic: how does this hold up when placed beside everything else I believe? Most ideas fail this test not because they are wrong, but because they were never examined in relation to anything else. Isolation is the condition of most thinking.

On productive uncertainty

There is a version of uncertainty that is generative rather than paralyzing. It arrives when you have acknowledged what you do not know without collapsing into the need to resolve it immediately. The paralysis comes from the demand for resolution. The productivity comes from the willingness to remain in the question.

Threshold language

The words we use to describe transitions are almost always borrowed from spatial experience — crossing, passing through, moving beyond. But the transitions that matter most are not spatial. They are changes in the nature of the problems you are capable of seeing. You do not cross them. You develop the capacity to perceive what is on the other side.
